Past reputation is not going to help this one

Review by X760 Telford, United Kingdom

This review is based on my 10 day stay in September 2021 . The hotel is quite a distance from Pathos , yet fairly close to the airport The hotel is situated in a line of beach front hotels and set on the sea front with a main road in the front , but there is very little traffic to cause any real issues . The hotel is of an older design , but don't let that put you off . Its so clean and tidy , but then it had only been open for a few weeks because of Covid 19 ...

We arrived quite late at night , and the check in experience was cold and bland . This was a surprise as we had booked a Superior All Inclusive package that was supposed to provide many benefits over the standard all inclusive package . A VIP check in was just one of the benefits. Prior to travelling to this hotel , I had been in contact with the front desk via email , but I'm sad to report that the replies to my questions were either inaccurate , late , or simply ignored !!! We had been travelling a long time , and we were told that a cold meal was waiting in our room . Not quite the nice touch that the Pioneer Beach hotel provided , which is only a few minutes away . Once consumed , we headed to the bar where we found a menu offering premium drinks as part of our package , but the staff were very far and few between , or they could not see the customers sat down as the staff were chatting at the bar. For safety sake - no one could go to the bar. I ordered a Budweiser , and it eventually arrived , but to my shock , about 15 percent was missing , and it was dead flat. Not a good first impression . Our room was a little bigger than standard , but for a superior package - it offered very little extra . As the room faced the road , there was sometimes evidence of traffic noise. The room was spotlessly clean , yet the house keeper was sometimes a little TOO keen to enter the room in the mornings. The air con was good and the WIFI fast enough to easily use. One small downside once again was a lack of places to put clothes IE drawers , but now we had power outlets and USB points by the bed . The bed was huge and really comfy . Food - breakfast was of a high quality , and unusually , served hot items that the UK residents will love - really good bacon and sausage. However , I do wish that there was a decent coffee machine to get my morning fix , however the freshly squeezed oranges were brilliant. The lunch time food was hot , tasty and was varied , and a joy to eat outside. The evening times for dinner ran smoothly , and for an all inclusive hotel , the food was varied and of a very high standard. Now , as we had booked a Superior package , then apparently we had full use of the A La Carte restaurant every night. I booked this package based on our experience of the Pioneer Beach Hotel , and the standard of the A La Carte menu and food , when we stayed in during 2019 - see my review. However at this hotel , the fun and games begin ! In order to book a table at the A La Carte - which to my mind , was part of our package - should have been a paid for right , we had to be at the doors of the breakfast restaurant promptly at 8am to book for that night. So much for going on holiday for a rest and not having to set an alarm . At the Pioneer Beach Hotel , you booked your table in advance at the reception desk when you felt like it ! So upon our first attempt , the bookings were full. I'm not happy so I visit the reception desk. Sorry Sir , that's how it is , you need to be there early to get table. At this point I spot an authorative looking gentleman standing by the side of the reception area . Turns out that he was the overall hotel manager. In fact he was Group Manager for all 3 hotels in the area. We discussed the matter , and basically , the whole thing was left unresolved , with no follow up communication , or any sense of satisfaction on our part. What was annoying to me was that the A La Carte restaurant was never more than half full , and often less. Next morning at breakfast , the manager was in evidence at the entrance to the breakfast restaurant. He tell us that we have a table that evening , but we still have to book daily. We noticed a general downbeat demeanour to the staff , as if they were under threat or pressure. Yet strangely , when the Manager was hovering close by , then attitudes changed and the level of service was at a totally different level . Take for example , our first morning , get your own tea and coffee , but when the manager was present , I was even offered a decent coffee from the machine in the bar. People bought us our food and just couldn't do enough. When he left - sadly , so did the service. During the day , there were virtually no activities , and unlike the Pioneer Beach Hotel , the staff and management do not attempt engage the guests , or give them any more than a basic stay . Unfortunately , come the evening , there is no poolside bar so everyone ends up either in the bar or on the balcony , being subjected to some times truly horrible entertainment . Lets be clear - there is no beach , but the grassed area had plenty of loungers with lots of space , but I suspect that this was due to the hotel being at half capacity .
If you want the explore , there is a small town nearby with all sorts of shops and bars , but looks a little run down , possibly due to the all inclusive trade. A bus stop is almost outside the hotel , and the fares are cheap should you wish to explore. A tip is to buy a day ticket , get to the bus terminal , and go where ever you want. Otherwise , there is a nice beach path that runs to the harbour , where you will find shops , bars , bus station , and a museum of a roman settlement , this is worth a look.

I was not terribly sad that my stay ended , yet once again , once the manager turned up , there were smiles and happiness everywhere , with wishes to see us again. In all honesty - I would have been better off with a standard room , and ate in the regular restaurant and saved a lot of money , because this is what we ended up doing due to the booking process. This is getting towards mis- representation I'm afraid. Added to this , the A La Carte menu was not as special as the Pioneer Beach Hotel ! Many people who visit this hotel are repeat visitors , but of the great many that I engaged with , most said it was their last visit . I will return to Pathos very soon , but I'm going back to where I had the better service and experience , this Hotel is simply trading on its name . This is a shame because I had high expectation of this hotel , and spent proportionately more money to get less . So take a look at my review of the Pioneer Beach hotel for a comparison.

Restful holiday

Review by 09robbins Swanley, United Kingdom

Lovely quiet hotel with great sea & sunset views. Food was excellent, breakfast, lunch & dinner, plenty of sunbeds to go around, very comfortable beds in the rooms, great waiter service in the bar, close to the airport for a quick transfer, but planes taking off didn't cause noise problems. Only downsides were the freezing cold pools & the noisy plumbing - I guess modernisation of the bathrooms is due as I've read that the sister hotel next door has been done...

Some good points

Review by overtheborder Sheffield, United Kingdom

Most of the points of the hotel we cannot fault. We had a junior suite with came with ultra all inclusive and a private cabana on the beach. This would have been great but ours was at the far end and forus, too far from the hotel. We manged to get in the A La Carte restaurant a few times and cannot fault this...

A massive shout out to the 2 staff K and L who worked here and are worth their weight in gold. We were also very impressed with the buffet restaurant, some of the best food we have had in a hotel buffet. The only downside was entertainment, it wasnt brilliant to be honest. Local singers and musicians and very low key. We also had an issue when a staff member tried to charge us for a drink but this was very quickly sorted at reception. The hotel was quiet so there were plenty of sunbeds, seats etc.

Coeliacs do not go here !!

Review by janis t Swarthmoor, United Kingdom

Having just returned from 2 weeks staying at this Hotel sadly I must report that if you are a coeliac ( gluten free) then they quite simply cannot cater for your diet ! Having emailed them prior to our visit and being assured they could cater for my dietary requirements they were quite simply OFFERING SOMETHING WHICH THEY CANNOT PROVIDE!! Hotel in every other way was beautiful spotlessly clean well observed covid restrictions hand sanitising etc etc. However if you are expecting to find a TUI REP in attendance at least once or possibly twice a week to help or answer any worries/queries you may have , then think again ! Only a TUI APP which we found useless particularly in view of covid situation re forms etc etc. Plus not everyone has this technology or knows how to use it ...

Hotel reception staff were available indeed very helpful but it is not there job !!

Staff were aggressive and contemptuous towards my disabled son

I accidentally used the indoor pool at this hotel with my disabled son, believing it to be part of the same hotel as the one we are staying in. Staff told us we had to leave: I immediately apologised and complied. But their attitude was unacceptably hostile and aggressive towards my disabled son...

We are staying at Constantinou Bros Athena Beach Hotel. It is next door to this hotel, has almost exactly the same name, and is identical as far as I could see. I didn't realise they are two different hotels. There is no fence or any marker marking the boundary between the establishments.

My 3 year old son and I were quietly swimming in the pool (he is non-verbal and very quiet). Staff came to tell me to leave. My apologies and the fact I instantly got out of the pool - particularly difficult given my son's mobility issues - were not adequate: they felt compelled to tell me someone had complained about the presence of my son. This was completely insensitive of them, given his disability, and not necessary as we were leaving anyway.

To make matters worse, the staff made a highly offensive hand gesture at me as they turned and walked away. The contempt they showed towards my son and I was completely unacceptable and breathtaking.

I would strongly recommend that anyone with a disability, or anyone who cares about disability rights, thinks twice before staying in this hotel.
