Surrounded by palm and olive trees and a delightful garden area with four fountains, the attractive Golden Odyssey hotel complex comprises eight buildings on 25,000 m2, including a main building and various bungalows. It features a variety of excellent services and amenities such as a daily shuttle to one of the cleanest beaches of the island, which is about 950 m away. Golden Odyssey Holiday

We had a lovely stay here. The room was a good size for 2 adults and 2 children. We had a quieter room away from the pool/bar. The advantage of it being quieter but it does also lack a good view. Several pools, slides and a good choice of food and snacks. I can't fault the staff- they were all friendly and work incredibly hard. The maid service visited daily. Free shuttle service runs to the town/beach during the day. Reception can arrange a taxi for 10 euros to the town or harbour. The all inclusive is on limited drinks until 11pm. It is worth taking your own cup/bottle. The negatives- the amount of single use plastic cups which could easily be reduced. The arcade toilets need updating. Some food items were labelled but others weren't. It would be useful to know if items were vegetarian, gf etc.

A Week at Golden Odyssey

We stayed at the Golden Odyssey Hotel in Kolympia, Rhodes as two couples aged 24–28 and had a really enjoyable holiday overall. There were definitely some things that could be improved, but we felt the hotel offered good value and had plenty of positives.

We were really pleased that we were allowed into our room early, which was a great start after travelling. The room was clean and tidy, with towels changed every day and the beds made regularly. It wasn’t given a full clean every day, but this didn’t bother us too much as the room itself was pleasant and well maintained.

The room had a fridge, TV (although all channels were Greek), four plug sockets and a really useful well-lit mirror.

One downside was that there was only one pillow per person and the pillows were quite hard. We asked for an extra pillow, but unfortunately it took two days for us to receive it.

The shower was probably one of the biggest negatives — the temperature and water pressure were both quite poor and inconsistent.

We were pleasantly surprised by the food. There was a good variety and we generally enjoyed our meals throughout the stay.

The restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly, attentive and quick to help. The older gentleman who greeted guests as they entered was particularly lovely and always had a joke or a smile for us.

The snack bar was also a highlight. There was a good selection of food and they were happy to make things to order. For example, if you wanted a plain burger without salad or sauce, they would prepare one specifically for you.

On one occasion the all-inclusive drinks pumps ran out of gas, but the staff were quick to sort this out.

There are four pools, as well as a tennis court, so there is plenty of space and things to do.

The main pool was clean enough, although it did look quite murky when you were actually underneath the water. Interestingly, it looked much clearer first thing in the morning straight after it had been cleaned, so I think some of the cloudiness was probably down to how much was going on in the pool during the day.

There were some issues with guests being quite reckless around the pool. During our stay, a large group were jumping in from the side, being rough, bringing drinks into the pool and throwing drinks at other people — including people who weren't even drinking them. There are signs saying there is no lifeguard and asking guests not to behave roughly, but unfortunately this didn't stop some people from behaving irresponsibly and affecting other guests' enjoyment.

There was also a man using a GoPro in the pool who we found a little suspicious!

One thing we were really pleased with was that there were no sunbed wars. Although some people did reserve beds, there was no arguing or fighting over them. Our group of four could easily find four sunbeds together, even as late as 2–3pm.

The entertainment was a bit hit and miss. Some of the entertainers seemed to lack enthusiasm, although the Greek night was definitely a highlight. There were performances as well as interactive parts where guests were taught some Greek dancing, which made it really fun and enjoyable.

There were also bingo and karaoke nights, so there was something going on most evenings.

There weren't always enough tables and chairs outside in the evening, which could make it difficult to find somewhere to sit together.

We also noticed a lot of single-use plastic throughout the hotel, including plastic cups and straws. This is something we think could easily be reduced.

The WiFi was unfortunately very poor and unreliable.

The pool table was missing four balls, which made it difficult to use, and none of the arcade games appeared to work during our stay.

The hotel doesn't use wristbands or any form of guest identification, despite being all-inclusive. This meant that, in theory, anyone could walk into the hotel and use the facilities, which felt a little strange from a security and all-inclusive perspective.

We also had an unusual experience when returning to the hotel at around 3:30am, when reception told us off for being loud. We understood that the hotel had rules, but given that it is a holiday resort and guests are free to go out in the evening, we found the interaction a little unnecessary.

The reception staff were very helpful when arranging taxis. There were preset prices for popular destinations, which made things really straightforward. For example:

  • Kolympia – €10
  • Anthony Quinn Bay – €27
  • Rhodes Town – €33

There is also a free shuttle to the beach, with the timetable available at reception.

There was a free bus to Faliraki Water Park at around 10am, although we were told that if the bus was already full, it could potentially skip the hotel stop, so it's worth being aware of this if you're planning a day there.

The on-site shop was really convenient and stocked pretty much everything you might need, although it was quite expensive. For example, sun cream was around €37.

There was also an on-site hair braiding and massage parlour. We didn't use these ourselves, but the hair braiding seemed particularly popular, so appointments are recommended.

Overall, we had a really enjoyable stay at Golden Odyssey. The staff were generally friendly and helpful, the food was good, the rooms were clean, and there was plenty to do. We particularly liked the relaxed atmosphere around the sunbeds, the Greek night and the fact that the hotel offered useful transport options.

The biggest negatives for us were the poor shower pressure and temperature, unreliable WiFi, lack of working arcade facilities, limited seating in the evenings and the behaviour of some other guests around the pool. Some of these things are obviously outside the hotel's control, although better enforcement of the pool rules would have made a difference.

For two couples in their mid-to-late twenties, we'd say the hotel is a good option if you're looking for an affordable all-inclusive holiday with plenty of facilities, rather than a luxury or particularly modern resort. There are areas that could definitely be improved, but overall we left feeling that we'd had a good holiday and would consider staying again.

Poor

So on our 1st night when we arrived an walked in our rooms Initially we thought they looked ok, until we opened the curtain to the balcony and it was a view from hell, it looked like building site! The beds were rock hard, we went to comlpain but the woman we dealt with didnt want to know and told us we would have to speak to her collegue the following morning, and we did. She was very helpful and sorted us 3 new rooms with pool view, bed still were not great but better than the 1st. The cleaners never cleaned the rooms they would throw the covers over the beds, leave towels and toilet roll but that was it, the entertainment was shocking! Even the kids were bored of the repetetiveness by the 3rd night. The bonus was Micheal the restraunt manager and his wife and the rest of the staff, they were very accommodating and helpful, food was a bit samey but Im a fussy eater and there was always something I could eat, the snack bar was the same but cant fault it as there was always plenty, the all inclusive drinks menu could also do with an upgrade as there wasnt much choice and I like a cocktail but not when all you can taste is pure alcohol. Hotel needs a good refurb as does the shuttle bus, I would not say it is a 4 star I would call it at the most 2 but we made the most of it as you do although I dont think I would return.

Save your money!

If you are used to 4* hotels then you’re going to be very disappointed with this one! It is nowhere near worthy of its status and was very disappointing on the whole. We arrived to be greeted by a very rude receptionist who simply demanded the tourist tax then barked directions to our room. The room was fine, a little cramped for three but clean and tidy on arrival. It didn’t stay this way as the cleaners simply emptied the bin and put clean towels in the room - no cleaning or tidying daily and multiple times we had our towels taken and no clean ones provided. We also had a mouse on the balcony which left droppings everywhere. The pools were freezing cold and I only saw them being cleaned twice during our 10 day stay. Sunbeds were taken early each day and despite the hotel policy being no reservations of beds this was not enforced. We witnessed people placing their towels across multiple beds late at night and they were still unoccupied by lunchtime the next day. This is not necessarily the hotels fault but if they enforced their policies it would assist. Sunbeds weee also very cheap and flimsy and many were broken. They certainly weren’t very comfortable. The ‘entertainment’ and I use that term very loosely was exactly the same every day except for Saturday when there is no entertainment at all / not even music around the pool! The darts don’t stick in the dart board, the pool fitness was unenthusiastic and the evenings consisted of bingo or just music playing. The three entertainment staff looked constantly fed up and miserable. The only good point was the restaurant staff who were very friendly and helpful - always a table and the food was plentiful and a good variety each day. All inclusive here only means non branded fizzy pop, local beer or wine everyday until 5pm when the bar opens and then there is a choice of a few cocktails added - the expectation is that people will pay extra for additional drinks at the bar. All drinks are served in very small, thin plastic cups. If you want an actual glass you must pay for drinks at the bar. In the day we found there to be no ice for the drinks and when we questioned this we were told there is only provision for one bucket of ice per day and when it’s gone, it’s gone! After complaining this was resolved and there was ice available however it shouldn’t have needed a complaint. The hotel is quite a walk from the nearest shops, bars and beaches and there is a shuttle bus which runs from the hotel but be aware that it gets dangerously overcrowded. A taxi cost around €10 each way. The onsite shop as very over priced. Towels can only be hired with cash not card - and they only accepted changes every couple of days. Overall we were extremely disappointed in this hotel and we certainly would not recommend it to others.

Definitely not a 4 star hotel. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

We're not holiday snobs and can appreciate a budget holiday for what it is.

That being said, this is by far the worst hotel we have stayed in. We arrived late, around 1am, and were given a bottle of water on arrival and were told if we wanted more it was €1 pwr bottle. Pools didn't seem clean at all, especially the main pool near the bar which looks green and you can see the algae on the sides. Food is terrible and extremely repetitive. The dining area isn't able to accommodate the amount of guests they have staying at one time, and quite often a lot of the food has gone. Rooms were very basic, maids come in and change the bedding but thats about it. Entertainment may aswell be nonexistent, there is a kids disco at 8.30pm but it is aimed at younger children so if your children are over the age of 6/7 they aren't going to be interested. If you like going all inclusive for the drinks during the day, don't bother. The only drinks available are self serve lager and wine which is only allowed in flimsy plastic cups. The main bar opens at 5 which will then serve cocktails and spirits in the same plastic cups. Sunbeds have towels on them 24 hours a day and the hotel seems to do nothing about this. Pools are supposed to close at 6.30pm but there are frequently people in them splashing around as late as 1am. Online it also said there was a 'fitness room' and when I asked reception where it is they said there is no fitness room or gym.

Now on to the good points - the slides were a hit and kept the kids entertained and happy. There is a life guard at the slides the whole time they are open. Staff were all very friendly.

In summary I definitely wouldn't say this a 4 star hotel. We have stayed in 3 star hotels with much better facilities, meal options, drinks available, entertainment and general cleanliness. Normally we dont have anything bad to stay about hotels we have stayed at, some have good points and not so good points but are great on the whole. I just want to warn people who are looking at booking here so they don't arrive and realise it isn't as advertised.
