Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa

TripAdvisor Review
Malta and Gozo, Europe
Sannat

Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa is an island paradise within an island paradise. Set amongst 400 acres of beautiful grounds on the island of Gozo, Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa occupies its own private realm looking down over Gozo and across to Malta and Comino.

Built in keeping with the traditional local style, Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa is unlike any other hotel in Gozo or Malta. It is designed for your complete and utter relaxation; five star luxury is a way of life here.

Five star luxury at Gozo's island paradise – the Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa:

Built on Gozo's highest point, the Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa affords unparalleled views. From this vantage point, you really do feel unencumbered by life's day-to-day worries. All that matters is the clean air, the astonishing landscape and the soothing rays of the sun. Peace and tranquillity reign. If ever a holiday could offer a transcendent experience, this is it.

In keeping with the local style, Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa is tastefully furnished – with lots of real wood and local stone, reinforcing that feeling of being at one with nature. Guest rooms are tastefully appointed, but come with all the modern facilities you'd expect, including cable TV, radio, telephone, minibar / fridge and cooling system. You will also enjoy your own private terrace or garden – just ask for more details.

For many, the spa itself will be the main attraction. In its indoor and outdoor heated pools, its sauna and steam bath, you can luxuriate in peace and quiet and savour each moment. To ensure every single care is lifted off your shoulders, the wellness centre also offers a Jacuzzi and massage service. (While those looking to get sporty can enjoy the gym and tennis courts.)

With all of Gozo stretched out below you, there is so much to experience and enjoy. But you may find that a week isn't even long enough to fully enjoy the Ta Cenc Hotel and its own surroundings, let alone Gozo. Still, with a superb hotel restaurant and extensive entertainment facilities, there isn't really any necessity to leave the hotel if you don't want to.

Visitors to the Ta Cenc Hotel and Spa enjoy a particularly special kind of holiday ambience and a unique sense of tranquillity that is very hard to resist.

The Local Area

Ta' Cenc, an island within an island for those who are looking for that special holiday of complete tranquillity and relaxation.

Built on Gozo's highest point, overlooking majestic cliffs and affording a magnificent view across to the islands of Malta and Comino, it is set in 400 acres of grounds. This very different hotel is built in local style so that it blends in with the surrounding landscape. The whole setting is one of remoteness at peace with nature.

We keep coming back for more!

Review by melbsteel Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Another year, another amazing stay at Ta' Cenc. We keep coming back because of the combination of idyllic setting, fun friendly staff and cats. Unbeatable combo. It's luxurious but laid-back...

The hotel is in a super peaceful spot overlooking the Med and has an unbeatable range of local wines to enjoy the view with. Special thanks to Borjan (and his sidekick Garfield), David, Zoran, Daniel and Chris for making us feel so welcome.

Total disappointment

When you book a 5-star hotel you always set some expectations for your stay. Nevertheless, Ta’ Cenc proved to be a total disappointment that I even decided to leave 2 nights before (even though the entire stay was fully paid).

The location is perfect but that’s where it ends. Staff are either extremely young and without any experience, while others are extremely rude and speak in Maltese in front of you to make sure you don’t understand...

Several episodes took place:

  • When you’re on vacation, the last thing you want to do is major plans for your day. Instead, you like to take things easy. That was my idea when I went to the hotel restaurant around 9pm and asked if they had a table available (if they didn’t I would be fine with that because I had no booking and would go for dinner somewhere else). The staff was friendly in the beginning and said “we can get you a table in around 20 minutes if you don’t mind waiting in the bar”, to which I replied “sure, no problem at all”. After waiting the 20 minutes I got my table and the same waiter says the following: “it’s better if you book a table next time to avoid having to wait by the bar”, my reply was: “no problem, I haven’t made any plans and more than fine to wait some time for a table.” I thought the conversation was going to the end there but after that, the waiter continued and raised his tone saying: “no that’s not ok, if you don’t book it’s a hassle for both staff and kitchen, you need to book”. This was extremely rude but it didn’t end here. My wife asked for a glass of wine, he brings a quite filled glass and says the following: “just so you know, the glass is fuller than usual because it was the end of the bottle, if you come here tomorrow and you ask for a glass and is not this full don’t complain”. To sum: you as a guest are a major hassle for them
  • Other episode took place when I decided to leave 2 nights before since the stay was way below expectations. I had already paid the full stay and just wanted to get out of there, went to reception to give the room card and ask if they needed anything else from me. When asked the room number, I said which number it was and the two employees switched to Maltese and talking about the room number and couldn’t find the information about it (because I was not expected to leave on that day but they didn’t really care in listening the first time). I kept saying the room number in English while they completely ignored me and continued searching for the information and other room numbers. Only when I decided to say the room number in Maltese (which they were not expecting I could speak the language) they stopped, looked at me with a fake smile. After they finally understood I was leaving earlier I asked “do you need anything else from me?” and their reply was incredible “no, bye”.

Apart from these two examples of the incredible staff, the breakfast was at the level of a 2 star and on top of that, it was impossible to eat with so many flies on your table and plate. When I say a lot, I mean not less than 5 or 6 on your plate at the same time. I understand it’s a location where you have a lot of flies, but you could easily have some citronella candles on the tables to help with the situation. I’m a dog owner and an animal lover. Nevertheless, allowing several stray cats walking around the restaurant while people are eating is probably not the best idea. First, when someone would leave the table and if the staff was not quick to remove, the cats would jump to the table and eat the leftovers. On top of that, cats usually fight each other (especially if there is food around), and having cats fighting very close to your table, sometimes almost under it, it’s extremely dangerous. When you would eat at the restaurant or ask for anything at the bar, you would never be presented a bill. They would just ask what your room number was and that’s it. Usually you can charge the amount to your room but you can see the bill and sign it as a proof that you have indeed ordered that. At the end I believe the amounts were ok since I had to take note of everything I ordered by myself, but definitely a very shady practice. The maintenance of the pool during the day was non-existent. Insane amount of mosquitos in the water, people would leave the towels on the chairs after they were done so they could be replaced, but the staff would only collect them in the following morning. Besides, the trash from other people near the pool such as cans or plastic glasses would stay there for the entire day, flying around due to the wind. As it happens in Malta overall, tap water is not advised to be consumed. Therefore, you always need to have bottles of water with you. When we arrived we had a 1l bottle of water but that was it, when they cleaned the room the next days they never left any water again. I had to go to a convenience shop and buy a pack of bottles and carry it to the room so I could drink water. Doesn’t seem a very normal thing for a “5 star hotel”. The hotel is called “Ta’ Cenc Hotel & Spa”, therefore, you assume you can use their Spa. Well, you can, if you have a long stay. I arrived on Friday afternoon and on Saturday morning went to book some treatment. When I asked about availability the reply was: “will you be here next week?”, my reply was “yes… until Thursday, why?” and then I received the information that they only had availability for Wednesday. Well, when the hotel decides to hire a very small number of therapists, who unfortunately also have to work as receptionists of the Spa, it’s not surprising that it’s so hard to find a booking. The hotel mentions they have a private beach, which sounds amazing. But, that’s not really accurate. What they call beach is a Bar & Restaurant which also has access to the water, which stays almost 3km away from the hotel. It’s definitely a good workout but saying you have a private beach it’s a bit of a stretch. As mentioned in other reviews, the gym had equipment from the 80’s, which is an experience for sure, but not what you are expecting in a “5 star hotel” and not safe at all. Hopefully there are some significant changes on this hotel in the future since the location is really good, but I can say that I will never return to that place and will make sure all my friends who also live in Malta are advised to avoid this place.

"Major disappointment"

Review by GMT3 Bernstadt, Germany

We recently returned from a 13-night stay at Hotel Ta Cenc in Sannat. The only positive thing I can say is its location on the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This property is at best a 3-star hotel and in need of major renovations...

The photos depicted online are deceiving to say the least. One section of the hotel looked like abandoned ruins with weeds and trash littering the grounds. There were broken sun umbrellas and lounge chairs stored in a throughway. We stayed in room 24A. While it was quite spacious with a comfortable bed, the bathroom had a broken window that could not be locked, mold around the tub and mildew on the shower curtains. The property had two pools - one for adults and the other for families. The pools were very nice but the lounge chair cushions were dirty and torn. The outdoor dining area was wonderful under the stars until all the cats arrived begging for food. The hotel had a second restaurant on the coast approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away but due to corona they provided no shuttle service. If you can see past the fact that everything is falling apart, you can still relax around the pool without any major disturbances.

Unique but deteriorating

Review by David S Island of Malta, Malta

Have been coming toTa cenc for these last twenty years. It's a one of a kind hotel with a tranquil ambience with a unique bungalow layout two good sized outside pools and nice indoor pool and spa. Common areas are nice and well designed but the bungalows need an uplift. The staff serving at the restaurant seems inexperienced.

I already stayed the second time at the Ta' Cence & Spa. My friend recommended this beautiful jewel and I was not disappointed. The hotel has a magical & peaceful atmosphere and very attentive and friendly staff...

The location just next to the Ta' Cenc Cliffs is amazing. It's overall a impressive place of power & tranquility. Special thanks to Werner and Elaine for making my first and second stay just perfect. I will return for sure!
