We booked a room with half board for three nights. We were also offered the option to pay extra 10€ for a surprise, which seemed to be something to look forward to. When we arrived to the room, it was probably the smallest room I ever stayed...
The air con wasn't cooling down, the door wasn't locking from the outside, and the telephone wasn't working. The shower area didn't even have a space to place a soap or shampoo. We complained. Maintenance came and fixed the door and "fixed" the air con. We went out and when we came back, the air con was still not cooling down. We went to reception, the guy said the manager wasn't there anymore, and he couldn't do anything other than giving us a fan. Separate to that, we went to have dinner and we were mistreated by an employee because of our dietary restrictions. He laughed about them in mockery. I ordered at the restaurant a large Coke, which costed 3€. When I saw the bar, they were filling glasses from 2 litre bottles. Food was below average; a bit tasteless. Also, going to the restaurant, when getting into a lift, a pressed the button too early and it started closing the doors on my wife. We were told off by an employee of the hotel like we were kids playing with the lifts. In the other day, we went to speak to the reception manager. I was hoping for another room and for the money back regarding the half board. She proposed to give us another room, same style, in order to fix the air con issue. About the restaurant, she offered us to go to their other restaurant, an ala carte one. The other room was completely different. Decent size, great. Air con actually worked.
A couple of days after we returned home, we were contacted by the hotel management. They apologised for the problems we faced and they explained us the costs of the half board. I had understood it incorrectly, reason for this revised note. In reality, the cost per dinner in the package was €12. I wouldn't recommend the hotel restaurant, for the reasons above described, but the ala carte one, Da Ciccio, would actually be a good option. Food was good. I would still say the service and set menu need to be improved, but €12 is not bad considering the food.
Lastly, I would reinforce this is not a 4 star hotel. The service we got you don't see in a 4 star hotel. In the contact from management, it was mentioned the industry turmoil due to the pandemic. I can't accept this as an excuse. Since the pandemic started, we stayed in other six hotels already. All in safe environments, adapted to the healthy standards, and in different countries. None of them we saw staff that didn't seem happy to have customers again.
We have visited this hotel a number of times, but our stay a few days ago was definitely the best........ the only negative aspect was that it was a short stay! The welcome at Reception was a pleasant one. The room was a seaview one and had a picturesque view of the iconic Mellieha Church, Mellieha Bay and even the islands of Comino and Gozo............
what more can you ask for? The hotel was very clean and our housekeeper, Srebrica, made sure that our room was spotless during our stay. The restaurant staff are most friendly (Doreen and Martina) shine above the rest. There was a good selection insofar as food is concerned. In conclusion we must mention the attention and support given by Mr. Pierre Agius, Rooms Division Manager. He leaves no stone unturned to ensure that guests are given the best service. Mr Agius is without doubt a great asset not only to the hotel but also to the hospitality industry in Malta. Very well done Pergola Hotel..... we hope to be back soon!
Overall 4/5 stars!
Location: 4.5/5 The location of the hotel is only a 2 minute walk from the bus stop on Adenau Street, where you can also find shops to buy groceries, souvenirs, medicine and the list goes on. You can find many places to eat around the area if you decide to dine outside the hotel. The hotel is only 10-20 minute bus journey to Popeye’s Village and a 5-10 minute journey to Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal so you can visit the beautiful islands of Comino and Gozo...
If you want to go into the city of Valletta it’s an amazing scenic 70 minute journey from Adenau Street.
Cleanliness: 4/5 As expected our rooms were very clean when we first arrived. The room got cleaned everyday but on one of the days our bathroom was still left the way it was before we had left. There is a sign in the bathroom that if you would like to new towels, just leave the dirty ones on the floor and it will be replaced. The following day, however, the bathroom was cleaned and we had gotten new towels to use. Outside the rooms the hotel itself looked very clean and the pools are cleaned every morning.
Food and Drinks: 4/5 The food and drinks in their inclusive breakfast was nice but didn’t have a lot of options for someone who doesn’t eat pork. There was still a wide range for those who love a full English breakfast to salads. I highly recommend their croissants! They’re super soft and delicious and you can have it with jam, butter or on it’s own! In the Cave Bar there is still a range of food.
COVID Precautions: 4/5 You must wear a mask inside the hotel at all times unless you are exempt and must provide proof of exemption. All the floor staff wear masks as well so you aren’t alone. There are signs around the hotel to remind people to wear their masks. When you ride the lift you must go in with people who are in the same household as you/ the person you are sharing the room with.
4 star hotel, but the cleaning service did not clean at all, all they did was beds (and not very good, to be honest). water in Malta is not drinkable, and there is no water fountain in the hotel. if you run out of water in the night, they sell you 0.5l plastic bottle for outrageous 2E!!!!!! continental breakfast, which due to corona restriction you cannot take yourself (which is of course understandable and common across other hotels, too)...
however, you may end up with a poorly cut fruits of questionable state, e.g. melon, water melon or grapes that have been there for few hours. some breakfast stuff was a bit rude, almost yelling at a guest 'what do you want' instead of telling them what is available, while you cannot see the offer due to restrictions. wifi was very poor in the entire hotel.
Fallen in love with the hotel and outstanding vue especially in the night. OMG the vue from the swimming pool to the Church and all lights in the street are breathtaking. Worth it to pay for that...
Rooms ok, big and clean. Staff in reception lovely, friendly and very professional. Kitchen works so hard. Food ok. We love especially a fruit salad and ice creams. Kids were crazy with that, as well with the swimming pool and cave bar. We will come back to you again. I’m sure. The transport from hotel very easy to all Malta. We traveled with the 8 years old girls everywhere by public transport. So easy to go to Valetta, to National Aquarium or to Gozo (oh we love Gozo) and to the Malta Airport. Thank you. 5 stars.
