family holiday

Review by Liz C United Kingdom

We stayed in August , the hotel was full and at times felt very busy however the staff coped very well. The hotel and our room were kept spotlessly clean which we appreciated. The buffet restaurants were good , our preference was the smaller of the two on offer...

We didn't use the swimming pools at all for two reasons one there were never any loungers available and the other reason was because the beach was nicer and always had lots of space. The location is excellent and provides you with everything you could want for a family holiday.

Excellent holiday, but room for improvement

Location: Great for the beach, a few local shops/restaurants and there is a good shopping centre a bit further along the coast (easily walkable along the promenade). A quiet resort, perfect for families.

Hotel: Although we stayed at Castillo, we mostly used the facilities at the Fuerteventura Mar, which seemed to have more going on and the pools were bigger. Reception gave us a QR code for the Barcelo App when we arrived...

We used it all the time to see when things were open, kids club activities and what times shows were etc. You can even contact the Reception via messaging on it.
La Perlita snack bar (on the beachfront between Castillo & Mar) is owned by Barcelo and you should get 20% discount as a Barcelo guest.

Room (Deluxe Studio): Immaculately clean and the cleaners did a great job every day in the rooms; even cleaning the floors. We had a couple of issues with the safe and the shower, but they were fixed immediately (within the hour both times). Kitchenette was useful as it gave the room an extra space with a table/chairs, but we did not eat in - just used it for the fridge/kettle.

Swimming Pools: The pools were very cold (couldn’t tell if any were heated) – we didn’t spend as much time in the water as we'd hoped, as it wasn’t a nice temperature. Family pool parties were great – we bought goggles as the saltwater/foam would really sting your eyes. As has been mentioned before, despite signs everywhere, sunbeds were mostly being reserved very early and people not using them till later. We used inflatables for 9 days straight in the pools without a problem and then were told on our last day they weren’t allowed.

Half Board: We ate at both hotels. Buffet breakfast was excellent. Dinner was chaotic and lots of queues. As has been mentioned in other reviews, we saw people using fingers and eating off buffet counters while they queued, rather than putting it on their plate. Lots of unsupervised children and food dropped making the floor quite a hazardous at times. I think it could have been better organised. We swapped most of our dinners for lunch which was a much more enjoyable and calm experience (we went out of the hotel for dinner). Overall, the buffets had a good selection, but they were rarely labelled so you didn't really know what you were getting. Drinks were cheap (3 Euros for a glass of wine).

Kids Club at Fuerteventura Mar: My daughter loved the Barcy Club, in particular Maite, who was an absolute star!! The activities were different each day with a theme: Art, music, sports, rehearsing and acting in a show, cooking, treasure hunt and a nature excursion (out of the hotel). After the main activity, they usually had time in the pirate splash park. This wasn't made clear to us at first, so we had to go back with swimming kit a couple of times. I'd suggest always wearing a swimming costume and take a bag with towel etc. The kids disco was brilliant as it was organised with a "leader" from the kids club that the kids could follow. Over the time we were there the children learnt all new dances/actions. I do think this way of doing a kids disco worked well (as I've seen other kids discos where they don't know what to do when faced with a huge dancefloor and no guidance). My daughter came back with a huge repertoire of dances for songs (which we are still doing at home now).

Entertainment: Overall was very good and we enjoyed most of the evening shows which were all family friendly. We did the aqua-dance at the pool quite a lot (which is advertised as adults, but kids can join in) and the random “pool shows” at around lunchtime were always a fun surprise when they happened.

COMING BACK NEXT YEAR

From start to finish all the staff were excellent. Most helpful when trying to speak Spanish.fantastic kids club staff. Food was the best all inclusive I have had both in quality and variety...

You might struggle to get a sunbed by the pools unless you get up before you go to bed!!! If you are one of those people then you are the problem!!!

Wow!!!

What a holiday! This hotel is absolutely beautiful in every way. Hotel was lovely, our room was amazing (we couldn't afford a Seaview but we got one anyway looking out on the wild Atlantic crashing against the rocks) beautiful food, beautiful and friendly staff, fantastic day and night entertainment and the location close to the main town was perfect. The one and only thing that was slightly disappointing was the pool...well the sun loungers...

The rules clearly state not to reserve them but by 7:30 every single morning they were all gone, we watched several families put thier towels down by 8am and not actually use them until after 2pm. We managed to get 2 hours on them the whole week and spent €60 at the beach for thier sun loungers (although the beach is stunning so we didn't mind) I think a hotel of this size would benefit from a deposit for them or even a time limit of 3 hours per family or room, but this didn't ruin the holiday for us at all, we still loved it and we will most definitely be returning with our children

Lovely

Review by nickyhasler Stanwell, United Kingdom

Rooms are clean are have lots of space. We went as a family with 5 rooms, before we travelled we requested rooms near each other as we have 2 people with mobility issues that need support and 2 babies. We was delighted that we was given 3 rooms that backed onto a shared garden/courtyard area, 1 room above them and the 5th room was just around the corner...

so thank you very much. our rooms where 2 mins walk to beach, pool and restaurant. Staff were very helpful. safe didn't work in any rooms for the duration of our stay, but we didn't feel we needed it as my son in-law left his money on the side everyday and it was not touched. Some of the aircon units didn't work, but if doors open a lovely wind came in and cooled the room.
