Overall we had a good stay at Monopol. (Room 139, sea views & direct pool access from balcony) Pros: Great location right by the main strip close to plenty of bars and restaurants. Beautiful and quirky reception with palm trees inside the hotel. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms, bedding and towels very clean. Our room also had direct access to the pool from our balcony which was very convenient. There is a pool and a hot tub and a sauna. Cons: Breakfast is basic and a bit bland. You won't go hungry but not the best breakfast we've had. Bathroom has a bad drainage smell in the mornings which seems to come up the plugs and toilet. No pool bar - the only way you can get food & drinks ordered to the pool is by walking through the hotel and ordering from Don Carlos restaurant next door to the hotel which is a bit inconvenient having to walk through in your swim wear. No air con in the rooms, there's a ceiling fan which blows hot air around and our bedroom was absolutely boiling at night. Mini fridge wasn't cold. You only get 30 mins free WiFi a day and then you have to pay for it. You also have to pay to use the safe. Overall though, an enjoyable holiday, a good stay and you get what you pay for.
The hotel is in a great location in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz which makes the hotel a great base for the town and getting to the transport links like the bus station. It is a lovely old hotel and the staff on reception were very friendly and helpful.
I had an upgraded single room in the newer looking back part of the hotel but it was a tiny single room with the bathroom being a little tired and the loo flush hanging a bit. The view from the patio door and balcony was of everyone else’s balcony and the pool and the seats by the pool. It wasn’t a room at the lovely wooden balconied front of the hotel but with everything considered it was ok for a couple of nights.
There is wifi in the hotel but it times out and it seems the free option is only for a short while and the device cannot connect again for thirty minutes. There is no air con in the room just a fan which was fine when I was there but may be a problem in high summer.
The breakfast was a good spread ranging from eggs, bacon, fruits, breads and it was tasty as they were making only a few bits at a time, like the eggs being done when needed so the food was always fresh. The restaurant has a view to plaza Europa and the front.
We stayed here for one night while visiting Puerto de la Cruz. The hotel is in traditional style and is full of wooden beams and plants and has a really lovely feel and the staff are welcoming and helpful. Our bedroom was on the 3rd floor and was basic as was the bathroom and could do with some updating however was spotlessly clean. There is no air conditioning but has a ceiling fan above the bed which did help. Our balcony was large and we had a fantastic view over the sea which was unexpected as I had only booked a standard room with a balcony.
Breakfast was ok but nothing special with limited choice.
The best thing about this hotel is the location it right opposite a beautiful church and near to all the restaurants and bars but in a quiet area opposite the sea.
I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking for a basic traditional hotel in the lovely old part of Puerto de la Cruz
Stayed here for a week which was probably a few days too long. We booked a double bed with balcony but first room we were given was twin and was directly over the road which made it impossible to sleep. We asked to be moved and the receptionist happily did this for us the next morning. Our next room was fine, terrace leading directly to the pool which was nice. However the rooms are very dated and in need of updating. We had a broken lampshade, mouldy bath seal, dirty paintwork and a number of other things that made the room feel tired and grubby, although the housemaids did a fantastic job at keeping the room clean. All the staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful.
As others have mentioned breakfast is mediocre at best, lots of empty dishes, limiting choices of food and not a great deal of fresh fruit etc.
The hotel location is fantastic for getting around and seeing the town. The building itself is also lovely and traditional but this hotel is in dire need of having some money spent on the bedrooms.
Lovely individual Hotel, lots of character, great location so handy for shops restaurants and sea. Breakfast excellent and staff very helpful. Could not fault. Would certainly recommend if you like older style rather than modern chrome and glass. Look forward to returning
