The Sugar Beach Hotel is set in palatial grounds in Wolmar, Mauritius. Enclosed in its own grove of palm trees, the Sugar Beach Hotel feels wonderfully removed from the rest of the word, but the thriving port of St Louis is close by. Beyond the manicured gardens the resort extends to the beach which boasts half a kilometre of perfect white sand.

There are lots of wonderful facilities to enjoy here including a fully-equipped fitness centre, tennis courts and some great opportunities for water sports and scuba diving.* There are also some great trails to explore through the trees and further out into the island - and you can hire bicycles* at the hotel to help you get about.

Access to the incredible spa, complete with Turkish bath (or hammam) is another perk of staying at the Sugar Beach Hotel. And another good reason to take things easy and go with the flow.

Very friendly staff and perfect hotel

I felt I needed to right a review on this hotel . As my wife and myself visited this hotel this month on a two week holiday with the travel adjacent KUONI . The staff in this hotel were perfect very friendly...

The food was lovely and the hotel situated on a perfect coast line of Mauritius.

Unfortunately 2 days into our stay the island had 3 reported Corona Virus outbreaks on the other side of island from locals returning off cruise ship which escalated to 14 cases on the island within a week. The Mauritian government desiding to rightly so close the boarders of the island to protect themselves which effected flights in and out from from the island . And rightly so everybody became very scared including obviously the staff of the hotel of the Pandemic Viras that had struck there island . The hotel and staff tackled this problem to the best that they possibly could which was perfectly dealt with . Yes there was confusion at times but understandable being that no Pandemic virus of this scale has every been tackled in later years . Very scary stuff but hats off to the hotel staff for dealing with this the best way possible. We were then moved to La Pirogue . The hotel's sister hotel next door to manage guests all in one hotel . Which wasnt ideal to have to move but was the correct decision to contain visitors this hotel was far from full with plenty of room . Plenty of hygiene points to wash hands . A nurse every morning to take temperature of every person before breakfast. Staggering of dinner time . Yes not the best holiday of our life but this was due to a Corona Virusout break on the island which started on the island. Both these hotels tackled the outbreak to the best of there abilities and the staff although scared stayed as friendly as possible.

Wonderful hotel and staff

My husband and I recently stayed at Sugar beach but unfortunately our holiday was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic and consequent island lockdown. During our stay we cannot praise the staff enough-they were friendly, attentive and helpful even though they were worried during this awful time. The hotel is in a beautiful setting and is very clean with everything you'd expect from a 5 star hotel...

The fruit platter on arrival was a nice touch. I could not believe the review from one other guest about the food and that all s/he had one evening was bread due to the lack of choice??!! The buffet choice was more than adequate along with the a la carte evenings. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to eat at the other restaurants due to closure because of the virus but this was totally acceptable in the circumstances. There were plenty of notices informing guests of the changes. We wish all the staff well and hope they keep well. We will definitely be back in happier times and it will be interesting to see the differences as the hotel is now undergoing refurbishment.

Fabulous Hotel

We spent 11 days in February in room 725 with a lovely view of the pool and sea. The hotel is immaculate and the grounds are so well kept.

The staff were all so friendly and can't do enough for you...

It's difficult to single out too many people but a special mention to Sanjeet at the quiet pool bar, Kevin at The Buddha Bar (for giving us French lessons!) and for Yashvin keeping our room clean every evening.

Our favourite restaurant is a difficult one too as the food in all restaurants was exceptional. I would like to say Citronella's but it was a tad chaotic at times and quite slow. The staff are amazing but it needs clearer management in my opinion. That said, we were on holiday and laid back as we were never in a hurry but it does need improvement.

Thank you Sugar Beach for a wonderful holiday. We hope to be back one day xx

We were at sugar beach resort for 2 days, welcoming was great. Our junior suite was fantastic with all amenities and well clean. Thanks to all housekeeper who care for our stay, especially khooshal,Ragini,Jean-Pierre,Diana,Baboo...

     Mini club team so attention to our daughter who had a great timeless memory with all of you.❤❤❤. Food was excellent. Thanks to all sugar beach staff members.

5 Star facilities... poorly executed

We arrived at Sugar Beach on 13th Mar staying AI for 10days.... I write this with 2 days remaining. Please be aware the last 3 days of our trip have been understandably restricted by coronavirus so I am not factoring this into our review where possible.


  • In general hotel facilities are decent and have a 5 star feel.
  • Garden & grounds are a real wow factor.
  • Beach is stunning, boat house activities are great, beach sunsets amazing.
  • Refurbed rooms are of good standard with great views
  • Housekeeping spot on with regular replenishment of towels etc turn down service and a friendly smile every time you bumped into their team.
  • Food has been pretty good all round, excellent meals at Citronella, Bhudda Bar & Coconut cafe (la pirogue)...

Buffet 7/10 but most nights no buffet but set menu instead, which was actually far better!


  • Guest relations, service and communication
  • First 5 days of our trip hotel was not as expected. No pool drinks service, no background music, no activities offered minimal evening entertainment etc. Sounds silly but all adds to overall feel of the place during the day - a stroll down the beach to La pirogue felt far more “alive” and still extremely chilled.
  • Again for first 5 days Service was incredibly slow and frustrating when it was quite common to see groups of 5+ staff chatting to one another whilst your struggling for 20 mins to order a drink. Happened regularly in Mon plaisir, Beach bar and Bhudda bar.
  • Day 6 arrived with a surge of new guests to the hotel and all of a sudden the place woke up! Service became quicker, pool service began, staff seemed much more chatty and smiley and day activities started to become more apparent with even a cooking demo by the pool (this is sort of what I expect from this level of hotel).
  • Communication throughout the entire trip (especially amidst coronavirus lockdown) has been extremely poor across the hotel. Very little info on evening activities ie what restaurants offer, what buffet theme or what entertainment was on, you sort of have to go and suss it all out. Given you have to book a la cartes in advance due to demand, it makes planning your evenings very tricky! The last two days of our trip the island has been on coronavirus lockdown, the hotel still has plenty of guests but all a la carte restaurants, boat house, pool bars and even pool towels have closed. I understand this may be required during a lockdown but there has been ZERO communication from the hotel on what is happening and what to expect. We have had to find out from speaking to other guests.
  • This hotel should not be labelled 5 star with this type of service and communication.

I don’t want to sound entirely negative so will end on a few highs...

...some stand out staff (aces in a bad hand!) that are worthy of a mention.

  • Tiriven (pool service) - incredible service and extremely attentive. Knows what you’re after without having to ask. Works his socks off all day up and down the beach!
  • Yanish (brasserie waiter) - friendly, and extremely good service. Fastest service we had all week!!
  • Citronellas team - we had a great experience every time went, team were great.
  • La Pirogue (everyone we came across) including La Morne and Coconut cafe staff.

To summarise - great facilities, stunning setting, good food and nice room but let down by poor service (except a few), terrible communication and a strange empty/part-closed feeling to the hotel!

From what we have seen we would book La Pirogue next time instead!
