As we say goodbye to the last pleasant days of summer in the UK, don’t let it get you down – plan a holiday instead! October is a great time to travel to countries that have a warmer autumn than we do. Here are our recommendations for places to visit at the chill sets in during October:

Malta

If you don’t want to travel too far, Malta is a great option for a holiday in October. It’s still warmer than staying at home and temperatures do cool down at this time of year, but they’re still pleasant in the mid to high 20s. Resorts and beaches are not as crowded as they are during the summer, so there is a more relaxing atmosphere. The Hypogeum is one of the top ancient sites to visit and the National Museum of Archaeology tells of the island’s fascinating history. Prices also cool down in October and there are some fantastic deals to be found.

Cyprus

Cyprus also offers lovely weather conditions and a relatively short flight time; it takes around five hours from London. Value for money, stunning landscapes and plenty of beaches are what draw tourists to the island all year round. The rugged interior in famed for its wine and walking tours, try the Diarizos Valley Wine Route or the Germasogia Walks. In October, you can enjoy temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s and plenty of sunshine.

Jordan

Want to try somewhere completely different, why not look at Jordan? The carved rocks of the ancient Nabataean city of Petra are a must-see in Jordan. A visit to the Dead Sea and some relaxing spa treatments using its famous salt water are a real treat. The average temperature for October is 20°C and there is little to no rain.

Eastern Coast of the USA

If you love the crisp air and colourful leaves of autumn, but still want to get away from home, New England could be the place for you. Whether you’re planning a break in New England or a tour of the historic sites of Washington, America’s Eastern Coastline is a fascinating place to visit. At the highest, temperatures will be around the same as the UK, however, it can get a lot chillier, so pack some winter clothes too.

Burma

Visit a tropical destination untouched by the tourist masses and see this beautiful country blossoming. Be sure to visit a Buddhist temple, such as the stunning Shwedagon Paya and the giant Buddha statue at Chaukhtatgyi Paya, both in Yangon. Temperatures are still quite high in October and, although it is the monsoon season, there are still sunny days to enjoy.

The Galapagos Islands

Breathtaking and unique, this collection of Pacific islands is unlike anywhere else on Earth. A licensed guide is a must for island tours and a small yacht is the best way to see everything. You’ll visit a giant tortoise breeding centre, see penguins, marine iguanas, as well as the stunning volcanic scenery. October is a cooler, drier, less busy and less expensive month to travel.
