Lovely hotel very relaxed atmosphere

Review by BernieGuernsey Guernsey

Have recently returned after 12 night stay, the complex is well laid out with large good quality rooms and a good size pool with 2 adjoining beaches. Food choice was generally good, we didn't eat in euther of the speciality restaurants but from people we spoke with the saud they were excellent. There were a few issues with water and electricity supplies but they were quickly resolved. All the staff are very friendly and welcoming especially at the time we were there due to Covid-19 the hotel was gradually closing down as no new bookings were arriving...

When we arrived there was between 150 and 200 guests by the time we left there were about 30. Would definitely return

A Wonderful Birthday Present and return to Kenya after 40 years!

Review by 790caroler

After a week on Safari and two days in Mombasa, visiting old haunts and my fathers grave it was a relief to arrive at the Leopard Beach Resort. Our check in was good except we were not able to get into our villa from 11am our arrival time till 4.45pm, in all fairness the hotel allowed us the use of another villa but it still would have been much better if we could have unpacked and settled in our villa after so many early starts and lots of travelling. We were on an all inclusive basis which was fine, having the villa allowed us to dip into the hotel facilities as and when we felt like but were able to retreat to the privacy and tranquility of the beautiful two bedroom villa with a pool...

Everyone at the hotel was charming and friendly and any problems were dealt with without delay. The food was excellent considering it is mass catering, a bit repetitive but the salads, curries etc were fresh and delicious. On the evenings of BBQ meat it was good. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to walk unhindered along the beach for a good few kilometres, I just politely used some of my rusty Swahili and was left in peace and quiet. Marco's bar has a wonderful setting and a good atmosphere and we had no problems with any of our drinks, we tended to stick to Beer and Gin and Tonics. It was a shame that we were not informed about the dress code for men in the evening at the restaurant but my husband and son managed with their one pair of long trousers! I had two good sessions at the Spa and am happy to recommend it. All in all it was the perfect end to our holiday and we certainly needed the nine days to chill out and enjoy all on offer. Thank you all the staff for making our holiday so enjoyable and for me especially the kindness and warmth of the Kenyans is as strong as ever.

An absolutely wonderful hotel, let down by the little things.

Review by Q8389HJkeithb Harlow, United Kingdom

After a lengthy journey from the UK our welcome really was, most welcome. Fruit juice and cold towels. Check in was uneventful and our room was ready when we arrived. The first day, and part of the second, we found the most direct routes to the various parts, as opposed to meandering without a map. Staff are friendly and courteous. Jambo to everyone. Food was absolutely first class. Lots of choice, and the best tasting vegetables I have ever tried...

I even passed on the meat dishes a couple of times. The dining expeience unfortunately spoiled by a shortage of essentials. Cutlery, crockery, glasses and napkins always missing. Only a couple of times in the fortnight did we find a table fully laid. This really isn't good enough! In our second week there was a noticeable uplift in guest numbers. This wasn't matched by an uplift in staff. Restaurant service dropped off significantly. Would we return? Unfortunately not, but only because the world is getting smaller and there are so many other places to see and experience. Would we recommend this hotel to a friend? Absolutely, 100% yes. We will remember our stay forever. The good experiences far outweighed the shortcomings and we wish all the staff good things for the future. And if you like monkeys, they come out to play about 4.30pm each day. Beware of the beach sharks though. Contrary to what the rep tells you, they don't take 'no thank you' and some you will have to be quite rude and forceful to. They are an absolute nuisance. We booked our safari though Polmans and had an excellent guide and comfortable vehicle for the two days. Others who booked through the beach sharks found themselves in cramped minibuses, and discovered that they had to check in again on their return as they had not booked through the recognised tour reps. A case of you get what you pay for.

Very nice hotel

Review by Honesty Murkle, United Kingdom

Stayed here for 2 nights pre safari, then 4 nights post safari. First thing we need to mention are the pancakes, delicious! Every afternoon 3.30 till 5.00pm there is free afternoon tea, tea, coffee cake, sandwiches.....and pancakes, freshly made, with no limit as to how many you take.

Pool is nice enough, could do with a good clean around the edge, green 'scum' all the way around the water line...

Would take an hour or two in the evening to scrub off. Looks awful. As others have mentioned, pool towels can be hit and miss....often none available due to laundry being late. Very limited shady areas around the pool.

Rooms are pleasant enough with good air con, just what you need. Strong sulphur smell in bathroom when you run the taps. Had this in both rooms we stayed in pre and post safari. Nice shower gel, shampoo etc., replaced as needed. Shower is desalinated water that never gets very warm, just tepid. But that's enough in the African heat, not a complaint.

We had ground floor rooms which get two sun loungers and a patio. This suited us rather than a 1st floor room that gets a small balcony with 2 chairs. If you want towels for the sun loungers, you need to ask at reception.

Food, buffet style, good choice most nights. Only 'complaint' is men are expected (vigorously enforced) to wear long trousers! This is a holiday resort with buffet dining, not fine dining. Smart shorts would be more suited to this climate. The amount of men wearing jeans that they travelled in was huge. Some men were wearing scruffy tracksuit bottoms, apparently these are acceptable rather than smart shorts??? UK travel agents really need to make this policy clear before travel. Or the hotel should relax the policy, this is not a Michelin starred restaurant! Service is very hit and miss in the restaurant. Just accept you may have an interesting choice of cutlery! If you need anything, just ask (rather than complain) and someone will eventually get what you need.

Small point regarding dress code. Women can wear what they like, including skimpy shorts and tops!

Breakfast is very good, more pancakes! Only thing that could be improved is the speed at which things are replenished, often no fruit juices available.

Drink prices. Way over the top! Water is 350ksh (about £2.50 per litre) Coke is 250ksh. Out on safari, in the middle of the bush, hotel prices were far less, 150ksh! Our advice would be to walk 10 mins up the road (turn left out of hotel) and buy water in the supermarket, 70ksh for 1.5 litres. The walk is safe and easy.

Beach is ok, there are loungers available with shade. Beach sellers will approach you, but will give up eventually once they get that No means No. They are chatty and not rude, but is does get weary keep saying no thanks. Sea water is very warm, don't expect to cool down!

Staff are really friendly and helpful in all areas of the hotel.

Check out is 10am, we asked to extend this to 11.00am, and hotel obliged. Thank you, made a big difference.

Lots of monkeys on the grounds. Adorable to look at. Keep your patio door shut as they love to explore!

Overall, very pleasant stay and would recommend.

One final comment, we were unaware that you cannot bring plastic bags into Kenya. You can be fined at the airport. We handed ours over on arrival. So take something else for bringing back laundry.

4 day Safari with Pollman's reviewed separately.

16 nights

Review by Steve S Bognor Regis, United Kingdom

we strayed for 16 nights here , well what can i say , some staff are absolute stars from Christine from the entertainment team and the sun bed , towel man , and the young ladies that were training , in the main restaurant and beach bar , are fantastic , some of the older man that served are very slow , and forgetful , we waited for 1.5 hour for coke and water on the beach , and evening dinner 1 night we managed to have starters and main meal , and still never got served with drinks at all ! younger keener and fitter staff are required , some staff are very polepole polepole and do not seem to care, enthusiasm of youth is needed for waiting and bar staff , as the trainee staff served 6 to 8 times more people than the older male staff very slow and uninterested. The hotel overall is fine , rooms are not cleaned to a great standard and we had a broken toilet seat for all 16 days , the beach front is fine and the beach boys are not a problem , just talk to them , as you would like to be talked too and they are fine , i spent an hour a day every day chatting with them , nice people , the grounds have lots of monkeys around , well it is Africa and they were there before the hotel, i did witness a silly lady chasing a monkey , whom had taken a bottle of sun tan location , and chased the monkey and grabbed the sun tan location of the monkey , which the monkey took this as an attack , and bite the lady on the ankle ,but your are warned not to leave your possessions out , and was it worth chasing and confronting this small monkey for a bottle of sun tan location , crazy , just buy another one , sad for the monkeys, as from that day 12 febuary the security guards chased and shot at the monkeys with catapults, just because of 1 persons stupid behaviour. the wildlife in the grounds are a great asset to the hotel , the bushbabies and fruit bats at night and the monkeys by day , were all there before the hotel was built and should be embraced ,with care, as this is Africa not Europe but all in all loved our stay ,
